"You're Beautiful" on YouTube[a]

"You're Beautiful" is a song by English language singer-songwriter James Edgeless. It was written by Edgeless, Sacha Skarbek and Amanda Ghost[1] for Edgeless'southward debut album, Back to Bedlam (2004). It was released as the second single from the album in 2005.

In the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland and Australia, the vocal reached number one and number 2 respectively. When released every bit the debut single from Dorsum to Bedlam in Canada and the Us, it reached number ane on both charts and received widespread airplay. In 2006, the song won an Ivor Novello Laurels for airplay.[ii] The song has sold 625,000 copies in the United Kingdom as stated by the Official Charts Company, and by Oct 2012 over 3 1000000 in the United States.[3] It remains Blunt's biggest hit single in the United states to engagement, and his only one to reach the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. In 2012, a new version of the single was issued in Japan. The Q;indivi+ Remix, featuring Japanese performer Keri, was issued on 28 March 2012.[4] [5]

The song is performed in the key of Eastward♭ Major.[6]

Writing and inspiration [edit]

Newspapers have claimed that "You lot're Cute" is about a former girlfriend of Blunt, Dixie Chassay,[7] casting banana for the Harry Potter films, although Blunt refuses to confirm or deny this. On eight March 2006 on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Blunt said of the song, "Information technology'south kind of miserable. It was about seeing my ex-girlfriend on the Underground in London with her new homo, who I didn't know existed. She and I caught eyes and lived a lifetime in that moment, but didn't do anything near it and haven't seen each other since."[8] According to Edgeless, he wrote the lyrics of the song at home in two minutes after meeting her, and so finished the song with Sacha Skarbek in Los Angeles, and with Amanda Ghost as well credited equally a co-writer.[9] Blunt said of the vocal: "It's always been portrayed as romantic, simply it'due south actually a bit creepy. It'south near a guy (me) who'due south high and stalking someone else's girlfriend on the subway. And so the stalker kills himself." In an interview with HitQuarters, co-writer Sacha Skarbek said that Edgeless brought the title, verses and the approach of the chorus to a songwriting session. Skarbek's contribution largely focused on the music aspect to the rails, contributing chord ideas for the verses, honing the melodies, and making sure the song stuck to, "a couple of key hooks rather than making it besides complicated".[10]

Several versions of the song exist. 1 lyrical version has an explicit discussion in information technology ("She could see from my face that I was fucking high") which was released on Back to Clamor and nearly of the "Y'all're Cute" singles. The radio edit of the song replaces the explicit lyric, changing it to "She could see from my face that I was flying high". Acoustic, live and DVD versions have also been released. Withal, considering of the word in question, the anthology was given a Parental Advisory sticker. When asked most the vocal, Blunt responded, "It's probably 1 of the least meaningful songs on the album and by no means people'south favourite. The anthology is similar a volume covering various aspects of life in a specific order."[11]

In the commencement of the vocal, Blunt sings the start line twice ("My life is brilliant"). The mistimed commitment was left in the last recording, simply omitted in almost radio versions. This is parodied in "Weird Al" Yankovic'southward song "You're Pitiful": Later the initial start, he says "What, was I too early? Oh, sorry. Should I...Practice y'all wanna start over? Or, go along going? Okay. At present? Now?" and and then begins the song again.

Music video [edit]

The music video for "You're Beautiful" was directed by Sam Brown. At least one writer's interpretation is that information technology shows Blunt taking his own life, possibly following a Japanese tradition of removing i'due south shoes and contents of vesture prior to jumping from a great height.[12] [13] Even so, the director of the video states in a "making-of" slice of footage that "[T]he idea [of the video] is congenital around the last line, where he says, 'I'll never be with you lot', and that idea of completely forgetting most something, of getting rid of that emotion, and moving on, and I think that the video is a sort of visual manifestation of that emotion."[fourteen]

Blunt removes the upper portion of his habiliment in a cold, blank, snowy setting and places all of his personal property on the ground. While doing this, seagulls circle overhead like buzzards.[15] At the end of the video, he jumps off a cliff and falls into the h2o while he sings the lyrics: "But it's time to face the truth, I volition never exist with yous". Co-ordinate to Blunt, he had to jump twice and suffered a carve up lip in the jumps. The video was filmed in Mallorca, Spain.[9]

On Nov nine, 2021, James Blunt announced the remastering to 4k resolution in YouTube on his Instagram. [16] ^[a]

The video has been parodied in a Dead Ringers spoof, with Jon Culshaw impersonating Blunt, singing the vocal with dissimilar lyrics where he explains how he can be absurd.[ citation needed ]

Critical reception and ubiquity [edit]

About.com gave the vocal four and a half stars out of five, maxim "The simple power of Blunt'south songwriting is effective at conveying the hurting of realizing he will never be with the object of his affections."[17]

"You're Beautiful" was ranked number seven in a poll conducted past Rolling Rock mag to identify the 10 most annoying songs.[18] VH1 ranked information technology number 95 on its list of the 100 Greatest Songs of the '00s.[19] In Oct 2014, Blunt stated information technology had become so ubiquitous that it was "force-fed downwardly people'south throats".[20] It has been named as ane of the worst songs ever recorded, despite its positive critical reviews.
